The Trail of the Serving Mother
The CAI trail dedicated to Our Lady of Montevergine starts at the piazza in Ospadeletto and continues straight uphill to the end of the paved road, where a CAI sign marks the start of the “Sentiero dei Pellegrini” [Pilgrims’ Trail]. A road with stone slabs leads to the remains of Cappella dello Scalzatoio [Barefoot Chapel], where the pilgrims left their shoes before continuing barefoot to the Shrine (hence the name) as a mark of devotion to Our Lady. The trail continues to wind its way to the “Sedia della Madonna” [The Seat of Our Lady], where legend has it that Our Lady stopped to rest on a rock, and where pilgrims have done likewise for centuries, wearing the rock down to resemble a seat.
The route continues onwards, intersecting with a paved road at a level with Casone. Keep right here, continuing parallel with the road, and take a right onto the cobbled road that leads to the “Tiglio Sacro” [Sacred Linden], where the path intersects with the trail from Mercogliano. Here the two trails converge, intersecting with the paved road at various points until the final stretch, where the Stazioni della Via Crucis [Stations of the Cross] lead the way to the shrine square.
