Situated at 740 metres above sea level, is a medieval village that offers the possibility to visit the 15th-century medieval castle built to play a strategic role and to monitor the valleys crossed by the rivers Ofanto and Osento. The castle was completely rebuilt between the 14th and 15th centuries, following the earthquake of 1854. The churches of Santa Maria del Carmine and the church of Santa Maria di Nazareth contain interesting artwork. The latter holds three paintings from the 18th-19th centuries depicting Saint Michael, Saint Peter and the Assumption, several polychrome statues of saints and the marble main altar in late Baroque style.
The grand water show in Monteverde, is an event that was organised for the first time in August 2006, against the splendid background of Lake San Pietro in Monteverde. Choreographed water features, theatre, dance, magic and music shows tell the story of the life of San Gerardo Majella Il Santo del Popolo. And finally in September, in Aiello del Sabato, the Fiano Music Festival is certainly worth a visit. It is a combination of high-quality jazz and guaranteed quality wine.
Monteverde has been included in the list of the most Beautiful villages of Italy.
