The park is situated at the feet of the Matese mountains, of which, Monte Miletto with its 2050 m. is the highest peak. The Matese is astride the regions of Campania and Molise, unifying places that are very different from one another, the calcareous one, the harsh and splendid, composed of crests and deep valleys, and the clay one, with the soft and sinuous shapes of the Adriatic sea part. A continental climate up high, and a mediterranean one in the valley help the biodiversity of the park. Lakes are the real surprise of the park: the Matese one, situated at a height of 1000mts, the highest one in Italy, the Gallo and the Letino that are used mainly for electric energy. The Lete caves offer the visitors great surprises: the upper gallery waterfalls and the stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the phosphorescent eyed butterflies. The park is a paradise for excursion and sport lovers: mountainbike, trekking, grass and mountain ski, horseback riding and speleologic excursions. Many interesting towns and hisotrical centers surround the park: San Lorenzello, Cusano Mutri, Cerreto Sannita and many others, that offer interesting cultural and artistic itineraries, as well as gastronomic and crafts ones.
