Caves of Cape Palinuro
Geological and ecological studies are carried out in the caves of Cape Palinuro by groups of marine speleologists. There are 32 caves, the most important is the Grotta Azzurra (the Blue Cave), which is accessed by sea. It has a bright blue colour due to the presence of a siphon (at a depth of around 20 metres) that allows sunlight to light up the inside. The Grotta dei Monaci (the Monks Cave) is also extremely beautiful. It owes its name to the presence of dark brown stalagmites that look like praying monks. Also beautiful is Grotta del Presepe, the Cave of the Nativity, the name of which says it all. The Grotta delle Ossa or Preistorica (Bones or Prehistoric Cave) is interesting from a scientific point of view with its bones of prehistoric animals. All caves are accessible only by sea.
