Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta and Church of St. Sofia
Pope John Paul II paid a solemn tribute to Benevento: “A city of dukes and gentlemen, its monuments recall the civic and religious greatness that has distinguished it throughout the centuries. Pagan Rome gave it its auspicious name, in place of Maleventum; but it is modern Rome, Christian Rome, that has conferred upon it its true vigour, disseminating the good news of the Gospel”.
Benevento cherishes the spiritual legacy embodied by its artistic and religious heritage: a wonderful fusion of indigenous, Roman and German civilisations testify to centuries’ worth of devotion and the interweaving of art, religion and history. Visitors are greeted by Rocca dei Rettori, the papal governors’ administrative headquarters.
Battle scenes, mythological creatures, knights and fantastical animals populate the cloister of St. Sofia; human knowledge, the frenzy of fear and hope, and the passage of time are all represented in the pastoral works that adorn the space.
The decorative dosserets linking the arches and columns represent the essence of human knowledge of all that is worldly and divine: they provide a contrast to the peace and silence of the cloister, celebrating the timeless invitation to reflection. Within the walls of the monastery, the monks contemplated creation, in a bid to understand the mysteries of the universe.
The cloister serves as a monument to the area’s history of protection and salvation; chosen by Prince Arechi as the capital, regular battles occurred that claimed many victims.
The cathedral of S. Maria de Episcopio is a trove of spirituality. The city’s first Christian temple, its Bishops included St. Januarius, who holds a special, nostalgic place in the hearts of Benevento’s people. It is home to the relics of St. Bartholomew the apostle, brought to the city by Prince Sicaro of Lombardy, after the population had converted to Christianity under the guidance of St. Barbatus.
