Castello di Arechi
On the mountain Bonadies, good morning, under the Longobard rule, the prince Arechi II built a Castle as defensive fortress of the Dukedom capital. The structure was born on a pre-existing building of the Byzantine period by strengthening the external walls and superelevating the battlements, making it inexupagnable by enemies. The structure is characterized by towers connected by a drawbridge, among which the Bastiglia, and has a central plant around which the entire complex revolves. Later, with the Normans and Aragonese, the castle remained basically the same, preserving its defensive destination. Today it is property of the Province of Salerno and it hosts a weapon museum (armours, spears), a chinaware museum (amphorae, jugs, vases), a glass museum (glasses, decorated chalices) and a coin museum to show the wars, the hunts, the commercial relations in the Middle Ages and ancient jobs. A curiosity. La Ricciarda, the tragedy by Ugo Foscolo is set in the castello di Arechi.
