Abbey of St. William, Goleto
Visitors to the Abbazia di San Guglielmo al Goleto are struck by the mystic splendour of its centuries-old walls; now partially in ruins, it stands immortal against the challenges posed by the elements and the passage of time. Instantly commanding awe from all who visit, the abbey inspires silence, prayer and poetry, while its spiritual atmosphere offers peace and refuge from the constant hubbub of day-to-day life.
The monastery, founded by St. William in 1133, has a special charm: this sombre, essential, bright space, characterised by encompassing, refined forms, harmoniously marries heterogeneous styles and symbols. Each rock bears the unique beauty of ancient chisel-work, preserving a centuries-old fragment of history imbued with faith, prayer and vocation. The serene calm of the place stays with the visitor long after they leave.
This monastery was home to both female and male clergy at various stages in history. For almost four centuries it was entrusted to abbesses, who ran it according to Benedictine rules, transforming it into an enlightened site of spiritual pilgrimage. Visitors are captivated by the eternal charm of the silent, compelling structure, which bears echoes of the day-to-day monastic life of times gone by: from work to communal and private prayer. It alludes to the mysteries of the past to which it bears witness, traces of which are preserved in the walls of the ancient site.
